The refrigerator light goes on...

I had this dish in Greenwich, England at a great curry house called Mogul (it's not hard to find a good Indian restaurant in England). The dish is a great combination of spice, heat, umami flavor and the paneer brings it all together with its creamy flavor.

This recipe is a milder version - think of it as the "one pepper" rating that you see on a menu. Add another 1/4 teaspoon for the two pepper spiciness and more if you like your meals even hotter.

 

 

Karai Paneer (Paneer with Tomato Sauce)

Servings: 4 | Serving size: about 1 1/2 cups

Cooking Time: 120 Minutes

This recipe can be multiplied by 2, 3, 4.

This recipe makes great leftovers.

Serve with Jasmine Rice or Jasmine Rice - Low Sodium Version or Brown Rice

1 Tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp garam masala
1/2 tsp paprika
2 Tbsp fresh ginger (minced)
2 cloves garlic (minced)
1 large white onion (finely diced)
1/2 tsp salt
2 15 ounce can no salt added diced tomatoes
2 cups water
8 ounces paneer (cut into 1/2 inch cubes)
1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves

Place the olive oil in a medium sauce pan over medium high heat.

Add the cinnamon, cloves, red pepper flakes, garam masala, and paprika.

Cook for 2 minutes. Stir continuously.

Add the ginger and garlic and cook for 2 minutes. Stir continuously.

Add the diced onion and cook for 4 minutes. Stir frequently.

Add the salt, tomatoes, and water.

Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer for 90 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Add the paneer, stir, and cook for 5 minutes.

Add the cilantro leaves, stir, and serve.
