Dr. Gourmet Diet for those with GERD/Acid Reflux

Ask Dr. Gourmet

Can I eat sushi if I have GERD / Acid Reflux?

Is sushi OK to eat if experiencing some acid reflux or heartburn?

Dr. Gourmet Says...

Wasabi

The one issue with many sushi and sushi rolls is that they will often contain wasabi. Wasabi root is quite spicy and could provoke symptoms of acid reflux in some. Interestingly, much of the wasabi paste served in Japanese restaurants today is actually made from horseradish.

A good option is to order sashimi or to ask the sushi chef to make your sushi and rolls without wasabi paste.
