Ask Dr. Gourmet

Is the nutrition information on this oatmeal packet correct?

I have bought a packet of rolled oats and it says this about nutritional information:
For 100 grams: 246 calories, 17 g protein, 61 g glucide, 7 g fat, 15,4 g fiber. Is this possible? Is 100 grams only 246 calories?

Dr. Gourmet Says...

a bowl of cooked oatmeal garnished with brown sugar, nuts, and raisins

I love this question. Your oats report that they contain 246 calories. This is how that breaks down according to your email:

17 grams protein at 4 calories per gram = 68

61 grams glucide (I am assuming that this is the French for carbohydrates) at 4 calories per gram = 244

7 grams fat at 9 grams per calorie = 63

That equals 375 calories. I can't tell you more than that but it doesn't make sense and does not add up.

Many packages are incorrect (and it appears that this one may be), especially those items that are imported into the U.S. from other countries.

Thanks for writing,
